Missouri Wrestling Foundation, Columbia Tribune

This week on TDR (July 4, 2009)

We’re back in the Brute Adidas studios of Takedown Wrestling Radio this weekend. Some say that the summer is the "off time" for wrestling. It isn't so.

Congratulations to Michael Johnson Jr., who competed in Utah over the last few days and was able to hobble on to the mat with a previously-injured ankle and win the Triple Crown in his age group at 220 pounds.

This is familiar territory for Johnson, who was a Kids Triple Crown winner as a Novice wrestler in 2007. It caps a very strong season for him. Johnson was the Ultimate Dominator in 2008-09, scoring the most points in USA Wrestling’s Ultimate Challenge Series of Folkstyle Wrestling.

He’s a big, 6-foot-2 kid with no desire to play football. I can only hope for Olympic Gold for this straight-A student from Downers Grove, Ill.

Joining us this week:

  • Chris Ayres- Head Coach of Princetonjoins us to discuss his team, his recruits, the Ivy and summer training and camps.
  • Ray Brinzer
The head man at Angry Fish and one of my all-time favorite wrestlers joins us to discuss his mutual effort behind developing "The Open Mat.com." Aside from being informative, it should be very fun catching up with "Ray man".
  • Eric Betterman- Co-founder of TheOpenMat.com
He'll share with us his goals for his site, his views and why he has developed this site with Ray Brinzer.
  • Brian Antonelli- Asst Head Coach of the US Naval Academy
We’ll discuss what's it like to work with head wrestling coach Bruce Burnett. Navy has a stellar recruiting class ranked in the top-25 in the country. When you think about how tough it is to get into the Academy, that's quite a feat!
  • Jimmy May- Baker University in Baldwin City Kansas.
Recently inducted into the Nevada Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Jimmy will tell us of the recruits signed and why smaller colleges, both public and private are adding wrestling at a steady pace. The team is set to start competition fall of 2009.
  • Harley Race- WLW Wrestling Boss Man
The former several-time Pro Wrestling World Champion will host a pro wrestling event in Waterloo, Iowa Friday, July 10th to benefit to Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute and Museum. Many of the Legends of Pro Wrestling will be on hand. Many thanks to Harley, his wife and partner BJ for their unflagging support of the DGIWIM. More information on this event can be had at:

June HS Wrestler of the Month: Morgan McIntosh of Santa Ana, Calif.

Des Moines, IA – Men oft times go by many names. In the case of our June High School Wrestler of the Month, Morgan McIntosh, the moniker of champion has been attached to his God-given name nearly as many times as the number of years he has spent on the planet. As a registered member of the Kickapoo tribe of Oklahoma, he is also known as Ane Kwa peta.

Morgan is 16 years old, a resident of Santa Ana, Calif., where he completed his sophomore year at Calvary Chapel High School in Costa Mesa. Morgan entered Calvary Chapel as a freshman, having completed his years of home schooling, a formula that has proved successful for his four siblings before him, Morgan being the youngest.

Morgan grew up surrounded by strong work ethic, and with a preponderance for what it takes to become a wrestler, let alone a champion. Morgan's parents, Brooke and Rebecca, contributed greatly, and provided appropriately, to allow him to participate in countless clubs and competitions. Brooke, a professional horse-shoer for 30 years, and a former wrestler himself, exhibited the balance of strength and skill Morgan picked up, applying it into thousands of hours on the mat. Morgan's interest in wrestling was instant after Rebecca located a flier for a local club.

As a freshman, Morgan compiled a 41-5 record and secured fifth in state at 160 pounds. This year he claimed the 171-pound title in the nation’s most populous state, where 820 schools compete in a single class. He carried a 43-0 perfect season record, and scored the Champion of Champions Award, a result of voting among his peers, based on his complete personal presentation, both on and off the mat. As can be expected of Morgan, he accepted the award with understated humility.

The road from age seven, when he entered the sport, to his most recent state title, is one paved with complete dedication, as well as requisite challenges. As Morgan was home-schooled during his elementary education, wrestling provided a great source of interaction with other kids his age. His parents pursued every opportunity that was possible for Morgan to learn, train, and compete. He competed in the USA Nationals as many times as the family was able to afford. He always finished in the top-three in Freestyle, placed three times in Greco – including first place, and was a Folkstyle National Champion.

Along the way, he has also been a State Freestyle and Greco Champion, a two-time triple crown winner, twice the Junior High Freestyle Champion, and was awarded the Most Valuable Eighth Grade Award title. He also credits a Tulsa Nationals title to his name.

He faced one of his greatest challenges in April during the Junior Western Regionals in Las Vegas, when he dislocated his elbow and finished fourth. The McIntosh family feared he would be sidelined for the Summer, although Morgan bested all predictions and recovered in time for the Cadet Nationals in Fargo. He completed the event as a finalist in both tournaments, ultimately losing at 189 pounds to Andrew Campolitano of New Jersey, the second-ranked high school wrestler for the past season.

Morgan's experience and success on the mat certainly defines well rounded. Impressive records, varied styles, multiple weight classes, and the titles to his name only begin to describe him as a person. He is an avid reader, and excels in History, and Social Sciences. He also takes an active role in his schools Youth Group, making contributions to many different communities.

Calvary Chapel head coach Arsen Aleksanyen provided great guidance to Morgan from the day he arrived to the school. Assistant coaches Josh Holladay and Jake Harmon are also youth pastors, and recently the Youth Grouproup has been working on developing new fish farming techniques to provide alternate food sources for missions in Mexico. Morgan completely enjoys learning ways he can help people that are less fortunate than him.

He is already focused on college, knowing he will apply his great wrestling experience and talent during his higher education. He also owns a keen interest in the military and may pursue a career there. He certainly shows the attributes that are necessary to become a leader.

TakeDown Radio, and all of the award sponsors, are very proud to select Morgan as the June recipient Wrestler of the Month Award. He becomes the tenth remarkable young person to earn the prestigious award.

TakeDown Radio would like to thank the sponsors of the Award. Without Resilite, W.I.N. Magazine, Brute Adidas, Intermat, and Sunflower Wrestling Supply, the award would not be possible. We are all very pleased to place our support in some of the nation's most promising youth.

May Wrestler of the Month given to extraordinary Chatanooga recruit

TakeDown Radio's ninth High School Wrestler of the Month award is comprised by a number of firsts. Dillon Dennis of Northside Christian School in St. Petersburg, Florida is the first state high school champion from his school, the first TDR award recipient from a private school, and the first from the state of Florida.

Dillon, a member of the National Honor Society, completed his senior year with the state championship title, a 4.0 grade average and the Pinelles County Wrestler of the Year Award. He's currently preparing to enter the University of Tennessee Chattanooga this fall.

Dillon, exhibiting the humility so apparent among many successful wrestlers, commented upon being informed of the award "I'm entirely honored, although why would they choose me?"

Given a perfect 39-0 season at 140 lbs., combined with his academic and extracurricular record, anyone else could hardly ask the same question.

Hailing from a strong wrestling family, three of Dillon's four siblings are also tremendous wrestlers. Growing up, wrestling and competition began on the carpet and in the yard of their family home. Fast forward to the present, brothers Dalton (sophomore) and Dryden (freshman) both placed in this years state tournament, and on the same night.

The brothers had set this goal for themselves at the beginning of the season. Given Dillon's state title and today's TDR award, his star may shine brightest, although all eyes should remain on the Dennis family for future awards.

Dillon serves as both captain and chaplain for the Northside Christian School team. Originally, coaches Chris Wilmington, Glenn Goodman, and Dave Butler offered Dillon the captain position, although Dillon's clear focus was to serve as chaplain. Dillon may be understated, although he is clearly an over achiever.

Inherently quiet, and perhaps even shy as a child, Dillon's sense of adventure is boundless. He communes with the great outdoors with every given opportunity. He presents a recent backpacking and camping trip in the California mountains, without tents, as one of the greatest experiences of his life.

University of Tennessee Chattanooga head coach Chris Bono announced the national letter of intent on May 14. Dillon accepted the offer based highly on the time and personal interaction with Coach Bono and his staff provided to him during the entire season.

While Dillon has not entirely committed himself to a specific course of studies, he's very interested in sports medicine, and wants to continue working with youth, as he does as team chaplain.

Dilllon's father, David, is President and CEO of Eckerd Youth Alternatives, a non-profit organization serving at-risk youth. Dillon is obviously surrounded by great family, friends, and coaches, and is really at the dawn of greater things in the future.

The TakeDown Radio High School Wrestler of the Month Award is presented by Resilite, and made possible by Brute Adidas, Sunflower Wrestling Supply, W.I.N. Magazine, and intermatwrestle.com . You can look forward to interviews with Dillon on-air, in print, and on the web in the near future.

TDR Founder honored by WIN Magazine

Des Moines, IA- May 27, 2009- Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine (WIN) recently announced the winner of six annual awards.

Takedown Radio host and founder Scott Casber was a co-recipient of the magazine's Mike Chapman Impact Award, which is named after the renowned wrestling author and historian who created WIN in 1993. This year's Impact Award also honored Bob Ferraro, the CEO and founder of the National High School Coaches Association.

The National High School Coaches Association puts on over 100 state, regional and national events in 20 sports, including the NHSCA Senior Nationals in wrestling, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. The event offers national competition for all four grades of high school.

Over the past 12 years, Casber and TakeDown Radio have covered national events at nearly every level of amateur wrestling. That coverage is expanding with the weekly production of TDR TV and audio podcasts, which can be found on IntermatWrestle.com.

"I think it is important to give the wrestling public a broad picture of the wrestling culture across the country," Casber said. "We usually only think about what is in our backyard. Wrestling is so much more to all people. We discover the passion for wrestling is even greater than I thought 13 years ago when we started the program."

Casber and his co-host Steve Foster travel all over the country covering in-season college tournaments and dual meets. This fall Casber will produce a wrestling-highlight news show for cable and satellite systems.

"The miles that Scott has put on traveling around to broadcast live at wrestling events and practice rooms is staggering," said WIN publisher Bryan Van Kley. "He deeply loves wrestling and wrestlers and works with every fiber of his being to promote our great sport to the max."

Casber, a native Iowan, fell in love with wrestling when he attended Iowa University.

"I could see wrestling up close and personal," said Casber. "I noticed that these guys were real people, who struggled with real problems, struggled to maintain their identity. They struggled with real issues whether they were self-created or not."

The complete WIN press release can be found here. The complete list of awards and recipients is as follows:

  • Mike Chapman Impact Award: Scott Casber, Takedown Radio/TV
Bob Ferraro, National High School Coaches Association
  • Dan Gable Coach of the Year: Mark Manning, University of Nebraska
  • Junior Hodge Trophy: Chris Perry, Stillwater (Okla.) High School
  • Schalles (Pinning) Award: Josh Patterson, Binghamton University
  • Junior Schalles (Pinning) Award: Eloheim Palma, Cary (N.C.) High School
  • Journalist of the Year: Tim Johnson, Big Ten Network/ESPN

(WIN honored Northwestern's Jake Herbert with the Hodge Trophy -- the nation's award for the best collegiate wrestler -- in late March)

TDR's Steve Foster named top broadcaster by peers

A number of champions were crowned during the 2009 NCAA Wrestling Finals, but exciting news was announced off the mat as well.

Steve Foster, the co-host of TakeDown Wrestling Radio, was recognized by a panel of his peers as the National Wrestling Media Association Broadcaster of the Year.

For 30 years, Foster has been driven by his passion for wrestling. He been a contributor on the program for eight of the nearly 12 years it has existed. During that time, he's seen the number of TDR listeners grow exponentially, while the show itself has made numerous advances.

Foster originally came to the show as a fan when he called to win a trivia contest. As his incredible knowledge of the sport became evident, TDR founder and host Scott Casber invited him to attend the show.

As they say, the rest is history.

Foster's own wrestling history began as a child living in Boone, IA where his father regularly took him to see Iowa State Cyclone home meets.

A wrestler himself, an injury sidelined him after eight years of competition. Since then, he has tirelessly dedicated much of his personal time to reporting on a subject that follows only his faith and family in terms of personal priorities.

Foster has logged hundreds of thousands of miles, covered every conceivable type of wrestling event and forged strong and long-lasting relationships with many of the top personalities in the sport.

Known for his relaxed, conversational, and professional reporting style, he regularly provides questions that draw on individual personality to provide perspective that is not found anywhere else.

"I truly appreciate winning this award and the respect that comes with it. Truly, it's my respect for what I consider the hardest-working and best-conditioned athletes in the world that make this possible for me. I'm just glad I have a way to give back," commented the eternally-humble Foster.

Foster joins a list of well known commentators who have won the award including fellow TDR host Scott Casber, Tim Johnson, Jeff Byers, Ken Chertow, J. Carl Guymon, Dan Gable, and others.

April Wrestler of the Month

Brendan Ard of Watchung Hills High School in Warren, NJ has captured the Takedown Radio (TDR) High School Wrestler of the Month Award for April 2009. The senior is the first two-time State Champion in New Jersey and the eighth recipient of the national TDR award. Brendan is the first award winner from New Jersey.

Brendan won the 171 pound State Title in Atlantic City March 7-8, completing the season with a 37-0 record, while amassing a 139-11 career record. During the entire season, only one opponent scored a single takedown against him.

He began wrestling as a Freshman, where he competed at 171 pounds, despite weighing 155 pounds. Exemplifying undeniable teamwork and exhibiting amazing strength, he accepted the weigh class as both the 152 pound and 160 pound classes were occupied by top performing team mates, including a State Champion. He wrestled mostly heavier and older opponents, winning the District 12 title in 2006.

“Brendan’s deep love for wrestling really kicked in during his Sophomore year, pushing other athletic pursuits like football and lacrosse aside”, described Watchung Hills High School Wrestling Coach Danny Smith. Brendan finished third in the state at 160 pounds his sophomore year.

Throughout his life Brendan has been surrounded by athletic greatness. His father is NFL football legend Billy Ard, an All Century Team Member of the New York Giants, and a Super Bowl XXI starter in the game where the Giants won their first Super Bowl title. His fathers legacy and relationships in football allowed Brendan to work on conditioning with collegiate football standouts and certain NFL draft picks Lydon Murtha (Nebraska) and Joel Bell (Furman).

“Brendan’s strength is amazing. He’s in the weight room at least three times a week, and does some very heavy lifting”, offered his father. Billy Ard is alumni of Watchung Hills High School himself, and father and son attended the same same elementary school as well.

The road to Brendan’s victorious record is paved with training at two particular elite institutions. He trained for years with Ernie Monaco at the Edge Wrestling School. He’s also logged unimaginable hours at Test Sports Performance, where his father helps college football players as they prepare for their migration toward the NFL drafts. Both schools are located in Martinsville, NJ.

Solid and dedicated academic preparation secured Brendan a wrestling scholarship to the University of Wisconsin, where he starts next Fall. He finishes high school with a graduating class of over 500 students, where his humility regarding both athletics and academics is symbolic of many successful wrestlers. He will most likely start at the 174 pound weight class at Wisconsin.

Since finishing the season as State Champ, he competed in the National High School Coaches Senior Tournament in Virginia Beach, VA., regularly hits the gym with diverse training regimens, and is learning Brazilian Jujitsu. He also won the New Jersey Courier News Wrestler of the Year Award.

TakeDown Radio, and all of the award sponsors, are very proud to select Brendan as April’s recipient.

TakeDown Radio would like to thank the sponsors of the High School Wrestler of the Month Award. Without Resilite, W.I.N. Magazine, Brute Adidas, Intermat and Sunflower Wrestling Supply, the award would not be possible. We are all pleased to place our support behind some of the nation's most promising youth.

High School Wrestler of the Month

TakeDown Radio, Resilite, Sunflower Wrestling Supply, W.I.N. Magazine, and Intermat have been pleased to present the High School Wrestler of the Month Award for the past seven months. We are even more pleased with the caliber of athletes and the number of submissions that were received. The gratitude generated by the recipients, as well as the accolades received from our listeners and the wrestling community as a whole has been tremendous.

Awards were presented across much of the country, included a wealth of diversity and experience, and ultimately served to enrich the lives and improve the prospects for the future for these gifted athletes, students, and citizens. Each month, the qualifications set forth for the award were clearly evident within each recipient and were based on the pillars of athletics, academics, and community.

Our beginning roster of national award recipients and model citizens went to;

  • Marshall Peppleman- Central Dauphin High School- Harrisburg, PA (September 2008)
  • Dallas Bailey- Catoosa High School- Catoosa, OK (October 2008)
  • Jordan Jones- North/Hoover High School- Des Moines, IA (November 2008)
  • Jacob Eisheid- Waukee High School- Waukee, IA (December 2008)
  • Josh Chang- Mingus High School- Cottonwood, AZ (January 2009)
  • Anna Cummings- Onondaga High School- Nedrow, NY (February 2009)
  • Christian Schuler- Bentonville High School- Bentonville, AR (March 2009)
In addition to the recognition and visibility generated through wrestling media for award winners, TakeDown Radio would like to thank the program sponsors for the physical awards (e.g. apparel, gift certificates, exclusive premiums, magazine subscriptions) presented to each recipient. Without Resilite, Brute adidas, Sunflower Wrestling Supply, W.I.N. Magazine, and Intermat, none of this would have been possible.

We look forward to continuing what has now become tradition well into the future. We want to encourage all wrestling coaches, families, and fans to submit information on deserving high school wrestlers they know. There are several ways to do so.

MARCH 2009 HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLER OF THE MONTH

High School Senior Defeats Challenges and Beats All Odds To Become Successful Wrestler and Model Citizen
Des Moines, IA- March 26, 2009- Much like the story of David and Goliath, Christian Schuler took on some giant challenges, emerging as the victor. The 18-year-old, 145-pound Bentonville, Arkansas high school senior achieved second place in State Finals during his junior year, with less than three years wrestling experience, and with a series of physical setbacks. Suffering a severe hearing loss and diagnosed with ADHD, his parents, coaches, and teachers credit wrestling for much of the incredible improvement and success Christian has attained.

On the mat, Christian wrestled nearly his entire Junior year on an undiagnosed torn ACL. Finally diagnosed, and only one week before State Finals, doctors allowed him to continue. During the second round of competition, the ACL severed completely, and despite pain doctors described as " off the charts", Christian finished the match to win, and went on to the finals where he took second in the state. Christian also finished second in the Diamond Missouri Tournament, with his only loss coming at the hands of a national runner-up.

Soon after, Christian suffered an additional injury during the Mudville Duals in Oklahoma that required arthroscopic surgery. Again, he would not quit. As quickly after surgery as doctors would allow, he wrestled in the Fayettville Classic where based on an Officials call, he was forced to forfeit due to injury and lost his starting slot for the State Finals in his senior year. Despite sitting out the finals, and based on his undeniable drive and determination, college coaches continued to follow Christian's progression both athletically and academically. Christian's hard work and sacrifice paid off as he was recruited to go on to college and wrestle for Bacone College in Muskogee, Oklahoma.

Off the mat, although directly related to wrestling, Christian contributed greatly to wrestling becoming a sanctioned high school sport in Arkansas. Christian recalls the times prior to wrestling, and as a football player, when members of the wrestling club were not allowed in the weight room due to wrestling being unsanctioned. Carrying over the incredible strength he built in the weight room as a football player to wrestling, he brought his might to organize and influence as well. He was contacted by Greg Hatcher, one of the key people accredited for the state becoming sanctioned, and was asked to address the Arkansas Activities Association as an ambassador and on behalf of wrestling, He also engaged in extensive fund raising activities to support the drive to officially recognize wrestling in the state.

Christian is a dedicated member of his church, where he serves as an Assistant to the Priest and participates in several church youth groups, including at the national level. Additionally, he volunteers his time to coach a youth wrestling club, where he is dearly loved and valued.

Coach Bill Desler lead Christian's team, the Bentonville High School Tigers, to their first sanctioned championship this season, as well as the two prior years when the states teams met in unsanctioned tournaments. TakeDown Radio was present and reported from this years first sanctioned State Championship and witnessed first hand the coaching that contributed so greatly to his progress. Christian is really part of a trilogy of success, that being personal, team, and state. It's what's called a winning combination.

Another thing that's certain. Knock Christian Schuler down, he gets up. Repeat the process as many times as you like, the result will come up the same.

TakeDown Radio would like to thank the sponsors of the High School Wrestler of the Month Award, now it it's seventh month. Without Resilite, W.I.N. Magazine, Brute adidas, Intermat, and Sunflower Wrestling Supply, the award would not be possible, nor would the lives of these wrestlers be as rich as they are today.
